UTK Going on Assignment in Prague is a hands-on reporting course. You will study and do news reporting in Prague with assistance from our provider organization, Transitions Online. You will create three reporting assignments that will appear on our class Word Press site. These will be a mix of text, photos, audio/video, and links..
Class work will feature guest instructors from the Associated Press, BBC, Reuters, the New York Times, Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty, and several Czech journalists. These working journalists will offer advice on how to improve every aspect of field reporting: researching topics, developing sources, asking good questions, taking good photographs, getting good audio and video, scripting and editing so narration complements images, and using “visual language” to improve news communication.
Our base is Prague is a superb location for this unusual "Going on Assignment" course. You will produce high-quality publishable pieces that will be real assets in your portfolio for future internships and jobs..
Must be in good standing at UT with a 2.0 GPA or higher
Undergraduate students must have at least sophomore standing
Interest in reporting is recommended
Students who successfully complete the program will receive credit for:
JEM 491: Foreign Study: Going on Assignment in Prague (3 credits, undergraduate students)
JEM 593: Special Topics: Going on Assignment in Prague (3 credits, graduate students)
The course will be an immersive journalism experience, including unique hands-on training, to enable students to go on assignment in Europe, while contributing to a larger investigative journalism project designed to achieve national and international attention.
Students will be housed in shared rooms in hotels. Breakfast is included each morning.
Housing is included in the program fee.
