Program Description:
UTK Veterinary Clinical Rotation in Belize

Program Description

The Belize Zoo is a small-medium sized zoo that houses native wildlife of various taxa including primates, felids, birds and reptiles. The intention is to provide veterinary care to the Belize Zoo collection, and local rehabilitation or wildlife rescue facilities, including the Belize Bird Rescue facility, as needed. All animal care will take place within the facilities provided by the Belize Zoo. Students will be involved with all aspects of case management (anesthesia, surgery, medical care and follow up) as well as record keeping, prescribing and in house laboratory work. There is a clinic on site, with a surgical area, treatment area, offices, a pharmacy and a laboratory for microscopic analysis of samples.

This program is conducted in Belize, a small country in Central America with a population of ~320,000, adjacent to Mexico and Guatemala. Belize has a wide variety of unique wildlife, responsible for a large boost in ecotourism. Belize has a diverse assemblage of peoples whose history and cultures influence wildlife. These include Mayan, Mestizo, Kriol and Mennonites, among others.

In addition to contact hours at the Belize Zoo, students will enjoy cultural excursions while in Belize.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Current veterinary student at the UT College of Veterinary Medicine in the clinical year
  • Good academic standing
  • Zoological medicine interest

Academic Credit

Students who successfully complete the program will receive credit for:

  • VMP 873 - Belize Zoo Rotation (2 credits)

The goals of the course are to expose final year veterinary students to wildlife and zoological cases, beyond what is offered through rotations in the exotics clinic and with the zoological service on site at UT. The course will expand upon teaching at UTCVM, and apply it to a developing country, with more limited resources.

Program Housing

Housing and program related transportation on-site is provided by the Belize Zoo.

The accommodation services are included in the program fee, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Belize Zoo.
