PAO Diversity & Inclusion Student Assistant

Position Description

This position will assist with the diversity and inclusion efforts of the Programs Abroad Office, including the new PAO Diversity Peer Mentor program. The purpose of the PAO Diversity Peer Mentor Program is to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and access within education abroad opportunities at UTK and help students from typically underrepresented populations to feel more comfortable and confident studying abroad. General reponsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Student recruitment for the PAO Diversity Peer Mentor Program
  • Mentor training
  • Student mentorship
  • Programming and event planning
  • Leading presentations, orientations, and interest sessions
  • Creating diversity and inclusion related resources
  • Participating in and promoting all office outreach events including, but not limited to Programs Abroad Fairs, Pre-Departure Orientations, Study Abroad Alumni Workshops and Campus Information Fairs

Position Qualifications

As a student leader on campus, you should consider applying if you are/have:

  • Enthusiastic and passionate about promoting study abroad and sharing their experience
  • Reliable, responsible, self-motivated and able to manage time wisely, multi-task and adapt to new initiatives and priorities
  • Committed to diversity and inclusion
  • Good public speaking, interpersonal, leadership, and written communication skills
  • Participated on at least one CGE approved education abroad program
  • A current, full-time, undergraduate student
  • Committed to the position for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic year (November 2019-May 2020)
  • Knowledgeable of world geography and have an appreciation for different languages, cultures and peoples

Additional Information

  • Pay is $8.00/hour.
  • Schedules can vary in this position. Typically students will work 8-10 hours in the office a week.
  • The student assistant is also expected to work additional hours each week participating in PAO office events and outreach.
  • Availability to work some nights, weekends, and through exams in December and May is required.
  • Attendance at the Student Assistant training is mandatory.

Planned Selection & Training Timeline

Please pay close attention to the following dates. If selected from the applicant pool, you must be available for an on campus interview, unless an alternative option has been discussed. If you are selected as a peer advisor, you MUST be available for both training days. These are mandatory and non-negotiable.
